Birdwatchers will know that the Exe estuary is renowned
as one of the major places in the British Isles to view wildfowl
and waders of all kinds, including migrants to these shores.
In fact it is the prime site in the country to see the RSPB's emblem
bird,
the AVOCET.
In the winter months there are naturalist guided bird watching cruises
leaving from the harbour just 200 yards away, with refreshments
on board. Indeed, the river cruises which operate most of the year
are an excellent way to view the whole estuary and the delights
it has to offer. There is also an excellent fresh fish/shellfish
shop at the harbour. There are short distance and deep sea fishing
trips available at the harbour .
The holiday resort's seafront with its attractions is directly
outside, and the town centre with its tea shops, curio shops, restaurants,
larger stores e.g. WH Smiths, not forgetting the excellent Exmouth
indoor market are all less than half a mile LEVEL walk away.
Exeter with its truly splendid medieval cathedral is just a few
miles away by road, and from Exmouth station the trip along the
estuary is one of the most picturesque railway journeys in the country.
At Christmastime, Exmouth has perhaps the most attractive illuminations
in the West Country; whilst in summer the town and seafront are
decorated throughout with the most wonderful floral displays, winning
the Britain in Bloom competition several times. All this makes Exmouth
one of the most beautiful and interesting places for a holiday at
any time of the year.
Also the renowned Eden project in Cornwall is 2 hours away either
by road, or more conveniently from Exmouth railway station, with
shuttle buses running to and from Eden from the rail station at
the other end of the journey.
WALKING Cycle Hire
We are on the South
West Coast Path, which offers superb coastal walking and is
a great way to enjoy the coastal scenery. For those who enjoy their
walking inland Exmouth is also on the East Devon Way, and a short
drive from Dartmoor
National Park.
CYCLING Visit Budleigh Salterton
A cycle path runs alongside part of the beach, and Exmouth provides
a good base if you want to attack the 2 National
Cycle Network routes that are in Devon.
There is now since spring 2008, a brand new cycle path to Lympstone
open.
NATIONAL TRUST
Explore the Devon villages with chocolate-box thatched cottages,
or visit many National
Trust properties - including A La Ronde at Lympstone, Castle

JURASSIC COAST
Exmouth is the gateway town for England's first Natural World Heritage
Site -
the Jurassic Coast. The East Devon coast from Orcombe Point
at Exmouth to Old Harry Rocks in Dorset has officially ranked alongside
The Great Barrier Reef and The Grand Canyon as a natural wonder
of the world - a World Heritage Site. The dark red cliffs at Exmouth
are 250 million years old.
